Exploring Whisky with Brendon
What do Japan, Ireland, Scotland, and the United States have in common?
An affinity for whisky!
And is it whisky or whiskey? In general, whiskey with an “e” refers to grain spirits distilled in Ireland and the United States, while whisky refers to Scottish, Canadian, or Japanese grain spirits.
On Wednesday, March 27, Bar Manager Brendon led a group of 24 BlakeSt Members on an international whisky journey. This particular tasting was one of the many throughout the “Exploring Series” Brendon leads for the House. (And just for the record, Brendon prefers no “e” when speaking of whisky in general).
For these tasting events, some Members attend solo, while others come with a small group of friends. Either way, the Club Lounge always settles into a collection of lively small group conversations. Brendon personally attends to each group, encouraging individuals to adopt a “pace yourself” tasting experience.
For this particular tasting, Brendon chose four distinct regional whisky selections:
Hibiki Harmony, Japanese Whisky
Green Spot, Irish Whiskey
Glenmorangie 10, Scotland, Scotch Whisky
Four Roses Small Batch, Kentucky Whiskey
Each participant received an overview card detailing the tasting notes, origins, and process behind these particular spirits.
While it was a whisky “tasting,” Brendon highlights it’s important to involve the other senses. Nosing whisky can help pick up characteristics and aromatic notes based on how it was aged. These four spirits ranged in flavor profiles. Some hinted of vanilla and coconut, while others featured green apple or sandalwood.
DJ Todd joined the experience in the Club Lounge, providing lo-fi House beats to set the mood. The musical undertone throughout the evening made the ambiance feel inviting and perfect for conversation.
